The book of Numbers begins with a census of the children of Israel who were to be counted by the number of men of fighting age. This must have shaped the psyche of the tribes as the totaled 603,550 fighting men. However, immediately following this census, God explains how to arrange the camp with the Tabernacle at the center. It's easy to take stock of what we have and what we think we can do, but if the Lord Himself is not at the center, it means nothing!
