Parashat Yitro, Exodus 18:1 -20:26(23), "Rule Book Relationships"

It appears that the children of Israel opted to follow the "rules" (the commandments) rather than do the fearful and careful work of developing a personal relationship with Yahweh, they chose to leave that part to Moses. When the twelve spies entered the Promised Land, ten of them said it couldn't be done. Why? Only Joshua and Caleb knew it was possible because of their personal relationship with the Almighty. Many may be willing to give their lives for love of God, family and country but few, including ten of the spies, will risk laying it all down for a book of rules. Only a personal relationship with our Adonai is sufficient to give us the strength and courage to shine as a light in the midst of darkness.
