What is the purpose of Shemini Atzeret? We hold on to the message of the holidays. On Yom Teruah we entered a time of confession and repentance. We came to God with a contrite heart, and on Yom Kippur our sins were forgiven and completely carried away by the azazel. On Sukkot we began a week of rejoicing, knowing that our iniquity is forgiven, our sins are forgotten, and the gates of heaven never close to those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Retain the joy of Sukkot! We tarry to spend an additional day with God.
