We build a sukkah, a temporary booth, a simple structure that looks more like a shack than an actual place to live. It reminds us of the 40 years Israel spent in the wilderness, moving from place to place, totally dependent on God. They didn’t have gardens, fruit trees, orchards or vineyards. They had no stable place to live, yet God provided for their every need. Sukkot reminds us that we are dependent on God for our next breath, and for everything in life. The wilderness was a time of discipline and provision. A time of testing and trusting… and character development. Dwelling in booths reminds of the wilderness. Sukkot has five different names, four of which use the word חג, which comes from a root word: to dance, to move in a circle, to celebrate. Now’s the time to get out your physical and spiritual dancing shoes.
