On Yom Teruah we entered a time of confession and repentance. We came to God with a contrite heart, and our sins were forgiven, completely carried away by the azazel. On Sukkot we began a week of rejoicing, knowing that our iniquity is forgiven, our sins are forgotten by God, and the gates of heaven never close to those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. So, what do we do on the 8th day? Retain the joy of Sukkot! We tarry to spend an additional day with God. Most English Bibles translate Atzeret, solemn assembly, meaning of a time of waiting on the Lord as a community, waiting together to hear from God and see what He wants to do. Shemini Atzeret is a day of expectation, waiting on God.
