Is retirement a Biblical concept? In this Torah portion Adonai commands that the Levites "retire" at the age of 50. They could "assist" their brothers, but without doing the actual labor. What we discover is that they moved to supervision and mentoring they used their experience to see that everything was done correctly. This is God's plan for our retirement! We may "retire" from our usual work, but in no way does He expect us to simply stop. Our experience is valuable to the younger generation who can use our knowledge, experience, encouragement and mentoring to help them continue the heavier work of the Kingdom. As long as we draw breath the Lord has something for us to do!
